BRHS Incident 3/1/19

March 1, 2019

Dear Parents,

As you know, we take our students' safety very seriously at Alexander City Schools. As superintendent, I wanted to make you aware of a situation that occurred today at Benjamin Russell High School. Our administration received information that a student displayed a firearm to another student in the parking lot adjacent to Benjamin Russell High School. Administration reported the situation to our School Resource Officer (SRO) which led to a search of the student's vehicle. The search confirmed that indeed the student had a firearm. In addition to criminal charges for having a weapon on campus, the student will face disciplinary action in accordance with Alexander City Schools and Alabama Department of Education policy.

Any time we receive information regarding a weapon on campus it is unsettling to us all. As you know, our schools have security measures in place to include SROs, cameras, and supervision. However, we can never underestimate the role we {students, parents, teachers, and administration) all play in keeping our schools safe. Please discuss this incident with your children and emphasize that it is against the law to bring weapons of any type on school grounds. Also, please emphasize the importance of telling you, a staff member, or administration if there is a weapon at school. In this way, we can all work together to keep our school system safe.

Thank you to those who reported the information about this situation as it allowed our staff and the Alexander City Police to address this quickly and efficiently without anyone being injured.

Dr. Keith Lankford
